It isn’t possible to ban people from tanning in sunlight like it is to prevent them from using a drug or beauty product that has been determined unhealthy for them. Still, most people heed the warnings about ultraviolet light and only go out in the sun with the appropriate sunscreen or block. There are always those who will remain sun worshipers regardless of the consequences. Some people limit themselves to just enough time in the sun to give them a little bit of color before a special event. There are many methods of tanning today that make getting a sunkissed tan a natural-looking and safe alternative to sun exposure.
- Tanning Beds – When tanning beds and booths were first introduced, they were believed to be a healthier alternative to natural sunlight. Now experts say that using one of these devices to get a tan before age 35 will increase your odds of developing skin cancer by 75%. Also, burning is easy due to the different power levels among beds and the necessity of changing bulbs regularly to make them more powerful. The tanning beds also limit movement so that getting an even tan is virtually impossible.
- Self –Tanners – These products come in a variety of forms but they all contain the same “secret ingredient” that makes you tan: dihydroxyacetone, or DHA. Tamar Vezirian, owner of Gotham Glow New York, explains that for their MacroGlow proprietary blend, they use a higher DHA content for those looking for a darker, perfect sunkissed tan.
- Self–Tanning Lotion, Creams, or Mousse – All of these products contain DHA and differ only in the texture and thickness of the product. Each must be rubbed onto the skin and getting an even application is difficult. When applying, wash your hands frequently to ensure the palms of your hands don’t end up with the darkest tan of all! Unlike tanning in sunlight, self-tanners will tan skin on any area of your body to the same degree. Some people prefer daily moisturizers that give you a subtle glow after several days of use.
- Spray Tans – There are two types of spray tans: those you apply yourself and those you get in a salon. Although these options don’t require you to rub the tanner onto your skin, spraying evenly over the body is difficult at best. The molecules of tanning solution that are sprayed onto the skin are large, resulting in gaps that prevent the tan from looking even and natural.
- Airbrushed Tans – This type of tanning is performed at a salon and the quality of the results depends on the type of airbrush guns used and the skill of the technician applying the solution. The benefit of getting an airbrushed tan over a spray is that the solution is delivered as a fine mist that provides even coverage all over the body or only on the areas where it is wanted. Truly skilled technicians can use the tanning solution to contour different features of the body to make them more or less noticeable.
There are many ways to tan, but only one way to get a natural-looking sunkissed tan that does not put your health at risk. Airbrush tans are the most obvious choice for anyone looking for a tan that makes them feel as good as they look!
